Whatever happened to Cuil? So much for a “Google Killer”

November 15, 2008 at 10:58 pm (Uncategorized)

Do you remember Cuil?  Whatever happened to those guys?  They had their 5 minutes of fame and disappeared.  Cuil was supposed to be the next “Google Killer” -  yeah right.  You know what i would want “Google Killer” to be?  Nothing like Google.  Something different and innovative.  Everyone copied G’s clean page  with a text box format (look at Live.com, ask.com), because Google was getting lot of attention.

Here’s what i don’t want “Google Killer” to be:

1)  Not a search engine

2)  Not a personalized page  (iGoogle or personalized Live page), but

A hybrid of Facebook’s alerts and things that are important to me.  I want my browser or my computer to learn which web pages i visit everyday and present me those pages or simply open them up for me only the first time i launch my browser.  I want to know what my friends are up to and who has uploaded new pics – just like Facebook.  However, i also want “Google Killer” to be accessible at all times – on my phone especially.

Overall, i don’t want my “Google Killer” to be anything like Google.  Google is just a search engine (a smart one, might i add) – my life does not revolve around doing new searches everyday but rather it revolves around my family/friends (FB), what’s happening in news that impacts me directly/indirectly, how can i save/make money, how can i improve myself financially and otherwise.  Now, if you can give me all that information in one screen (like executive summary), you’ll be my hero.

  1. S said,

I will tell you what I would like the “google killer” to be.

A no nonsense search engine. When I want to look up businesses in my area….and I request within 5 miles. I ONLY GET THOSE and I GET ALL OF THEM…not just the ones that paid someone extra dough to get to the top of the food chain. Just looked for optometrist in my area and I knew of more of them than they told me about….and they told me about the ones that were miles away, cities away, and many times, states away.

    What is with that?

I have had it with listings of A, AA, AAA, AAAA, AAAAA, etc before the “my business name” or what they do.

When I ask for camera shops I want camera shops, not everything with the word “camera” in it. Yes…I used the ” “. GRRRR

Yes, give me another search engine. Give me one that is smart and doesn’t waste my time. Give me one like they have in the libraries but with some guts.

I appreciate that socializing is very nice….I like to do it in person. Getting comments from all over the world may be fun too…and it has its place.

I just would like to be able to get business done easily when that is what I am doing and it is the market that is being missed. No one seems to care…oh..they care about the business….not the customers. Which is silly….cause, if you make the internet basically useless, then the customers will go back to the thing that still works….the phone book, and the library.

And when I was looking for optometrists the other day….I did that. I also started calling my friends…for the real world spots that aren’t listed in the book either…sigh.

thanks for these postings…I really loved the “Bing” one. I totally flunked the search engine thing. If it isn’t called MSN and it is their company…then they aren’t on my radar at all. I learned from their mistakes though, thanks to you…thank you!

Pick a name and be consistent with it….right…got it. Take care!
